The fine arts are an integral part of the curriculum at Grace Academy because we recognize that it is vital to educate the whole person. Students are offered courses in band, choir and dramatic arts in all areas of the school.
The Middle and High School Choirs compete in various local and state competitions and consistently receive Superior ratings. Participation in East TN Vocal Association’s (ETVA) All-East Choirs and the Band & Orchestra Association’s (ETSBOA) All-East Honor Bands is a highlight for many students in the choir and band program. Students of all ages can also take advantage of private voice and instrumental lessons.
The dramatic arts department in the upper school annually performs two plays of varying genres. Some recent performances include Crossroads at Columbine, Charlotte’s Web, The Butler Did It, The Matchmaker, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Good Morning Miss Dove. At the elementary level, students perform two musicals each year as well as weekly chapel programs.
Grace students also excel in the visual arts. Students are encouraged to display their works in competitions around the area as well as within the school. The annual art show is outstanding, and many students have received community recognition for their paintings and sculptures.
5th Grade Beginning Band is our introductory program where students learn the fundamentals of their instruments in a once-a-week class.
Upper School Concert Band includes 6th-12th grade students. While both bands perform at the Christmas and Spring Concerts, this band also competes in local and regional festivals. From these competitions, many students are selected for honors bands. This year over 30% of the band’s students achieved this recognition.
The High School Wind Ensemble performs advanced chamber works as well as large-scale compositions. Performing at the highest levels expected of high school musicians, they also serve as the pit orchestra for our spring musical.
The Golden Eagle Marching Band, our most visible performance group, is comprised of students in 7th-12th grade. They perform at all football games and pep rallies, as well as traveling to competitions each year. The marching band also participates in community service and outreach.
