Girls Varsity Soccer Wins Two Titles for 2015 Season
Only one team ends their season with a win. In high school sports, that is the eventual state champion. At the end of the season, many evaluative questions can be asked. One of those questions is, “Where did you start and how did you finish?” For Gretchen Hammel’s varsity girls soccer team, a lot happened in that space between the start and the finish.
A disappointing opening game loss at Loudon Co. was followed by another setback in the home opener. From that point on, a slow but steady improvement began to become evident. Grace won four of the next five, then five of the next seven games. The toughest part of the schedule resulted in a three game losing streak, including a loss to Boyd Buchanan. This loss gave our rivals the first seed for the tournament and the home field advantage.
From this point, however, things began to turn. After winning the opening round of the District Tournament at home, Grace had to travel back to Loudon County for a semifinal game. In this rematch of the game where the season had begun so roughly, the Grace girls would endure a very hostile environment to upset their hosts, 1-0.That victory earned Grace a spot in the District Championship game at Boyd-Buchanan.
In the next round of playoffs, the region semifinal victory was highlighted by Kayla Bibbs ‘hat trick’, complemented by Abigail Smith’s two-goal,one assist performance. The Region championship game became a rematch when both District finalists defeated their opponents in the semi-final round of tournament play.
Played at Grace this time, the Lady Golden Eagles took an early lead on a Katie Houck header from a Maddie Ferrel corner kick. After conceding a tying goal, however, most of the rest of the game was played in a tie and the game appeared to beheaded for overtime. With less than two minutes remaining, Abigail Smith supplied the game-winning goal and the Lady Golden Eagles outlasted their rivals fora 2-1 victory and the Region Championship.
This win earned them a chance to host a sectional game, a one match playoff to determine who advances to state. And this is where the season ended, just one step shy of the state tournament. This was a team that fought back from defeat and fought through adversity all season long. The championships they earned at both the district and regional level validated the growth and development under the outstanding leadership of Coach Gretchen Hammel.
Out of 136 schools playing soccer in our classification, our girls were in the final 16. What a great year!
